In the Footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia

Enjoy the dramatic Arabian deserts, live the authentic life of the Bedouins, ride camels, star gaze and, most excitingly, ride the 100 year old steam engine train used by T.E. Lawrence.  Join us on this authentic small-group journey!

Thomas Edward Lawrence (16 August 1888 – 19 May 1935) was a British archaeologist, military officer, and diplomat. He was renowned for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule in 1916–18. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia - a title used for the 1962 film based on his First World War activities.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Amman, Jordan where you will be met and transferred to the Aqaba Airport.

Day 2  Aqaba
After breakfast, enjoy a brief lecture on T.E. Lawrence. Depart to see the Aqaba Battle site (Aqaba Castle and Shore) which will include the archaeological and GAR (Great Arab Revolt) museums and the Aqaba Marine Life Station. Enjoy free time shopping and exploring Aqaba before returning to your hotel for dinner.

Day 3  Wadi Rum
This morning we will head towards breathtaking Wadi Rum through its back roads, the same roads Lawrence took! Here you can chose either the 4x4 Jeep adventure or a traditional camel ride (of 3-5 hours). We will spend the full day in Wadi Rum visiting Lawrence’s “graffiti” and his headquarters, before climbing the shifting sand dunes for a traditional Bedouin lunch. Afterwards it’s off to see the natural rock formations, the local Bedouin Village Rum and watch the sun set over the ever changing colors of the Rum Mountains. The evening ends with a night of music under the stars and an overnight in a Bedouin tent.

Day 4  Alhumaymah – Ma’an – Petra
A busy day awaits you. We will start the day by taking Jeeps to the Kharazah Graffiti showing 2000 to 3000 years of the stories told on Arabian Caravans. Then we will move to the Alhumaymah Archaeological Village covering the Roman, Byzantine and Islamic eras. We will stop by the 6000 BC Neolithic site of Ain Aljamam, before heading to Abu Allusson Battle site. Finally, enjoy a visit to the Hejaz Railway Station in Ma’an, which was attacked by Lawrence, originally used as a Muslim Pilgrimage Station on the way to Mecca. After this amazing day, head to Petra for an overnight.

Day 5  Petra
Following breakfast, it’s off to Petra for a tour of one of the 7 Wonders of the World, the highlight of which is el Khazneh - "The Treasury". Established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Arab Nabataeans, Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and a symbol of Jordan, lying in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Wadi Araba, the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Writers identify Petra as the center of the caravan trade, for enclosed by towering rocks and watered by a perennial stream, Petra not only possessed the advantages of a fortress, but was the crossroads of the main commercial routes which passed through it to Gaza in the west and across the desert to the Persian Gulf. Petra is known as the "Rose City" due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.

Day 6  Kingsway Road – Shoubak Castle Visit – Dana Reserve
Today we will drive along the Biblical Kingsway (1200 BC) stopping by Adhruh, the most famous Roman garrison site in Jordan. Then stop at the Islamic Judgment Site, visited by Lawrence. Continue to Aljarba towards Shoubak Castle. You will have the chance to examine the 2nd century Trajan Road (Via Nova Trajana) before heading to Dana Natural Reserve for a walk in an eco-trail and a campsite overnight.

Day 7  Dana Reserve – Tafeelah – Jurf Aldaraweesh – Amman
We will start the day by visiting the biblical capital of the Edomite Kingdom (1200 BC) and seeing biblical Sella. Then drive to Tafeelah Castle, a place where Lawrence stayed on his way to the Tafeelah battle site where Lawrence and the GAR Armies won a difficult battle. Visit the Jurf Aldaraweesh battle site driving through Alhasa to Qatraneh where we will board the 100 year old steam engine train riding the Hejaz rail to Almahata in Amman.

Day 8  Amman – Arnoon Valley – Deaboon – Mekawer – Mount Nebo – Madaba
Breakfast is followed by a drive from Amman through the dramatic scenery of the Arnoon Valley “Wadi Al Mujib Reserve.” From here we head to Deaboon, the place where the Moabite Stone was found. Then visit Mekawer where tradition says John the Baptist was beheaded by Herod Antipas. In the afternoon we will visit biblical Mount Nebo, the alleged burial site of Moses overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, and the 6th century mosaic city of Madaba, where the oldest map of the Holy Land exists on the floor of Saint George's Church.

Day 9  Amman – Desert Castles – Azraq
Today we depart towards the Desert Castles and Azraq Castle where Lawrence of Arabia wrote his memoires and spent a lot of his time. This important day gives us a chance to experience the essence of the writer and his attachment to the region. Return to Amman for our last night.
